On December 22, 2021, Texas Senator Ted Cruz argued he is well-positioned to win the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
He pointed to his second-place finish behind Donald Trump in the Republican Party’s 2016 primary.
According to POLITICO, Cruz made this statement during an interview with The Truth Gazette, a conservative news outlet run by 15-year-old Brilyn Hollyhand. When he was asked if he would launch another campaign for the presidency, Cruz replied: “Absolutely. In a heartbeat.”
“You know, I ran in 2016. It was the most fun I’ve ever had in my life. We had a very crowded field. We had 17 candidates in the race — a very strong field. And I ended up placing second” Cruz stated.
“There’s a reason historically that the runner-up is almost always the next nominee,” Cruz continued. “And that’s been true going back to Nixon or Reagan or McCain or Romney that has played out repeatedly. You come in with just an enormous base of support.”
Cruz was able to obtain the second-highest number of delegates at the Republican Party’s 2016 convention in Cleveland. At that time, several of Cruz’s supporters attempted to scuttle Trump’s nomination and disrupted the nomination process.
In the Trump era, Cruz has taken harder stances on immigration, as seen by his decision to sign on to a letter calling for the Trump administration to halt the issuance of guest worker visas and his move to block the importation of Hong Kong refugees.
While it’s good to see Cruz go more nationalist in his outlook over the years, the Republican Party is still Trump’s party. According to a poll by Harvard CAPS-Harris, the overwhelming majority of Republican voters support Trump as the Republican nominee during the 2024 elections.
No matter what establishment conservatives say, the Trump era is very much alive and in the case he runs again, he will assuredly cruise to the GOP nomination in 2024.
