Florida Senator Marco Rubio is leading a group of senators to introduce a proposal that would cut federal funding from cities and states that allow foreign nationals to vote in local and statewide elections.
Rubio is joined by Montana Senator Steve Daines, North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis, Louisiana Senator John Kennedy,Florida Senator Rick Scott, and Oklahoma Senator James Lankford, in introducing the bill titled “Protecting Our Democracy by Preventing Foreign Citizens from Voting Act.” According to John Binder of Breitbart News, this bill would:
- Strip federal funds to state or local governments that give foreign nationals the right to vote in any federal, state, or local elections.
- Require state and local governments to certify that they do not allow foreign nationals to vote in elections before receiving federal funds.
South Carolina Congressman Jeff Duncan is introducing a similar plan in the House.
“It’s ridiculous that states are allowing foreign citizens to vote,” Rubio declared in a statement. “However, if states and localities do let those who are not U.S. citizens to vote in elections, they shouldn’t get U.S. citizen taxpayer money.”
“Allowing non-citizens to vote in our elections makes a mockery of U.S. citizenship,” Kennedy opined in a statement. “Some Americans were born here, and some immigrated here legally, but no citizen should have his or her vote nullified by a foreign citizen’s ballot.”
The legislation comes on the heels of Democrats in the New York City Council approving a proposal that grants voting rights in municipal elections to roughly a million foreign nationals. In effect, foreign nationals who have resided at least 30 days in New York City can now vote.
New York Republicans plan on fighting this voting scheme in court, arguing that the state’s constitution clearly outlines that voting rights only pertain to American citizens.
“Sadly, far-left states and cities have moved to disenfranchise Americans by allowing non-citizens to participate in our elections. This must be stopped,” Daines stated.
This legislation is a good first step but Republicans need to push against mass migration even harder.
Reacting is simply not enough. The good thing is that national populists are now in the political building. This will allow for key national question issues like an immigration moratorium to become mainstreamed throughout the election cycle.
The major theme of Republicans throughout the 2020s is one of purges. Namely, the purging of neocons and other establishment fixtures that are awful on key issues such as immigration and foreign policy.
One of the easiest ways for populists to flex their muscles is by going all-out on the immigration question.
