White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said people will have to mask up when traveling by air permanently. Fauci, also the director of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, made this announcement during a Dec. 19 appearance in the ABC program “This Week.”
Program host Jonathan Karl asked Fauci whether he thinks passengers will one day be able to ditch face masks while on board a plane, to which the infectious diseases expert answered in the negative.
“I don’t think so. I think when you’re dealing with a closed space, even though the filtration is good, you want to go that extra step,” Fauci said. (Related: Fauci says he’s now pushing masks after previously saying they weren’t needed because of supply shortages.)
Karl’s question came after some airline executives said that travelers can eschew face coverings while inside airplane cabins.
Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly pointed out that the air filtration system in commercial aircraft makes it safer than other places during a congressional hearing.
“The statistics, I recall, is 99.97 percent of airborne pathogens are captured by the HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filtering system that is turned over every two to three minutes. I think the case is very strong that masks don’t add much, if anything, in the air cabin environment. It’s very safe [and] very high-quality compared to any other indoor setting,” he told Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker.
Doug Parker, the CEO of American Airlines, concurred with Kelly during the hearing. “The aircraft is the safest place you can be. It’s true of all of our aircraft, they all have these HEPA filters and the same airflow,” he told lawmakers.
Whether it’s masks or boosters, the medical tyranny never ends
Fauci’s insistence on wearing face masks inside commercial aircraft aligns more with medical fascism than prudent health advice. The infectious disease doctor has also followed the same train of thought when it comes to vaccines.
In recent months, Fauci’s rhetoric has centered on supporting Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine booster doses. He has sought to redefine the meaning of fully vaccinated as receiving three vaccine shots instead of the usual two.
“I would not at all be surprised that the adequate, full regimen for [COVID] vaccination will likely be three doses,” he said during a September 2021 White House briefing. Fauci defended the immunity given by boosters as “dramatic” and “durable.” However, he pointed out that health authorities would have the final say on changing the definition of fully vaccinated.
The infectious disease doctor reiterated the need for booster doses amid the emergence of the omicron variant. “Certainly, when you want to talk about what optimal protection is – I don’t think anybody would argue that optimal protection is going to be with a third shot,” he said during a Dec. 8 interview.
He also told journalist Kate Bolduan in the same interview that the definition of fully vaccinated could include boosters any time soon. (Related: Fauci shifts goalposts, redefines vaccine to include booster shot.)
“Right now, I don’t see that changing tomorrow or next week. But in my own personal opinion – it’s going to be a matter of when, not if.”
