It is not only in Communist China or the autocratic dictatorships of Central Asia that the Internet and related messaging services are being censored and disabled. In Europe, too, the fight against the Telegram service, popular in the resistance to the Crown, has now been engaged. Now there is even the threat of a ban.
Is Telegram threatened with extinction?
Especially in Austria and Germany, where Corona’s protest brings tens of thousands of people to the streets every day, governments want to monitor Telegram more closely and even modestly. Because the demonstrations and other resistance actions are mainly organized in groups on Telegram, some of which have hundreds of thousands of members. A thorn in the side of the regimes and their dictatorial fantasies, of course. The murderous topics of “online hate” and “anti-Semitism” are swiftly addressed in order to make a ban possible. This could also soon threaten across the EU, including full surveillance of encrypted digital communications on these and other services.
It should also not be overlooked that Telegram founder Pawel Durov has a shady past and among other things, he is a member of the Young Global Leaders of the World Economic Forum.
Telegram is currently (partially) blocked in the following countries (according to Wikipedia):
